During the month of March we are encouraged to speak Irish as best we can, not just in school but any place where Irish is spoken. The emphasis is on participation and fun, you definitely do not have to be fluent to have a go! In fact Seachtain na Gaeilge has become so successful that it has evolved into a two week event. In our school we add our own twist to things with Gaeilge le Chéile, where the children are encouraged to speak Irish to each other and to the staff all throughout March. They also do sports through the medium of Irish, with the older pupils organised into groups to help and encourage the younger children. Our hurling coach, James, is also in the school on Friday morning and there are some photos below showing the two events in action. Sixth Class had a very informative and enjoyable visit from the Garda Team during March. After the talk in the classroom the children went outside to see the Garda van. Some passing teachers and pupils couldn't contain their curiosity....it isn't often that we hear sirens in Coolnasmear....and they were also allowed to try out the equipment. Well done to all of the children (and teachers!) who dressed up as their favourite characters for World Book Day. We got some great photos on the day. |
