Scoil Naomh Gobnait is a co-educational primary school under the patronage of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Waterford and Lismore. The ethos of our school encompasses collective attitudes, beliefs, core values, traditions, aspirations and goals. These are reflected in the actual practices which are carried out in the school on a daily basis. It is impossible to outline all aspects of the school’s ethos. However, the following are the aims and characteristics which are experienced and promoted as essential elements in the establishment of a supportive and positive ethos.
As our ethos is that of a Roman Catholic school, religious instruction in accordance with the doctrine and tradition of the Catholic Church is part of the education given to our pupils who belong to that church.
The pupils are prepared for the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation.
Prayer is a feature of every school day.
St. Gobnait, patroness of our school and Kilgobinet Parish is remembered in a special way on her feast day, February 11th.
We value the partnership which exists between school, parents and community.
We aim to run our school efficiently and smoothly as we believe this contributes greatly to our peaceful, positive, productive, progressive school environment.
A harmonious relationship between school, B.O.M and Parents’ Association is cultivated.
The professional, personal and spiritual development of the teaching and ancillary staff is promoted by the B.O.M. individually and collectively.
We encourage openness to new educational approaches and initiatives, and we also encourage attendance at new educational developments.
As our school is a place where learning is celebrated in all its forms it is our hope for the pupils leaving Scoil Naomh Gobnait that they will be happy, confident, tolerant, caring, hopeful and responsible with strong self-esteem, a good standard of education and a desire for further learning. We also hope that they will be able to function well as individuals and as group members with a respect for themselves, others, property and their environment while having an appreciation for the many cultural and creative facets of life.
We believe every child in our school is entitled to his/her childhood.
We believe that all staff members should be valued as individuals and their work celebrated.
We aim to work as a team rather than as individuals.
Staff with individual skills are encouraged to share their knowledge and expertise with pupils and other staff members.
We aim to create a calm, happy, peaceful and secure atmosphere in the school environment.
Close contact is maintained between school and home. Parents/Guardians and teachers work together in leading the children to the fullness of their potential.
We aim to instil in our pupils a set of core values – honesty, integrity, responsibility, caring, citizenship and good judgement which will stand to them during their time in Scoil Naomh Gobnait and in their future lives.
We want to nurture in children a set of academic skills through the effective teaching of the curriculum in all its varied methodologies.
We will strive to instil a love of learning in our pupils and encourage them to do their best at their lessons, their homework and all tasks assigned to them by their teachers.
We are mindful that each pupil is an individual, has different talents and ability and has a worthwhile contribution to make.
Teachers encourage each other and pupils encourage each other to develop individual talents and make everyone feel safe with no bullying.
We will ensure that each pupil has an opportunity to speak and we will strive to develop pupils’ capacity to listen.
As Scoil Naomh Gobnait lies in an area rich in culture and renowned for its drama, song, music, dance, poetry and all things Irish – déanaimid tréan iarracht na tréithe seo a choiméad beo agus a chur chun chinn. Tugaimid seansanna chomh minic agus is féidir an ceol, rince, drámaíocht agus an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim agus a chleachtadh.
Manners and respect are words constantly used in relation to ourselves, our fellow members of staff, our fellow pupils and visitors to our school.
We encourage and expect very high standards of behaviour. Such behaviour is constantly and consistently acknowledged and praised. However, sanctions have to be in place for all forms of unacceptable behaviour (see policy)
A spirit of mutual respect is promoted within the school community. Pupils are led by example and teaching to appreciate and respect fellow pupils and people generally of different religious affiliations and of different nationalities.
Pupils are taught the real meaning of loyalty and pride. When involved in any public activity they realise they are representing themselves, their family, their school and their parish community.
We strive to have pupils of all ability levels well equipped to meet the challenges of Secondary School.
We wish the pupils to take with them “the Coolnasmear Spirit” and many happy memories of their years in Scoil Naomh Gobnait.
We wish all staff members to be happy, enthusiastic and fulfilled in their place of work.
We wish all visitors to our school to feel welcome ,relaxed and safe during their visit.
