If You Don’t Like Summer by Wendy Piersall
School is out and summer camps start
And older people feel younger at heart
And even at night it’s warm and lazy
If you don’t like summer you must be crazy
Swim in the pool, eat some ice cream
Stare at the clouds, get lost in a dream
Spin in circles until your brain is hazy
If you don’t like summer you must be crazy
Go to the beach and build a castle
Or you and your friend in the sand can wrassle
Lie on the green grass, make a chain with a daisy
If you don’t like summer you must be crazy.
SESE:
This activity involves taking our pulse before and after exercise to notice the difference between the two.

Visual Arts:
Third Class Memories
Children can create a memory wheel to illustrate some of their favourite memories from third class. The wheel could be a large circle divided in to six/eight equal parts. This can be drawn on card or paper.
Memories- It might be a nice idea to brainstorm some of the memories at home. A few that might jump out include: Halloween dress up, Santa’s visit, Christmas Carol Service, football/hurling friendly with Old Parish, Fr. Kennedy’s retirement mass, Pizza party, Toy Day, Pancake Tuesday, Book Sale, World Book Day, St. Gobnait’s Day, Green School’s scavenger hunt, Science Week, Maths Week, Favourite lesson/topic/group project etc.
Children could write third class memories in the centre. Then they could choose their top six to eight memories and put those on their memory wheel. They could write a sentence or two before creating illustrations and colouring. Once again, I would love to see these so please email a photo of your creation to: [email protected]

The end has come so very quick - it’s time to move along,
The final days of this school year have been and now are gone.
This year has been so wonderful; the time has gone so fast,
We’ve learnt so much; had so much fun - the time’s just whizzed right past.
Enjoy your summer holidays and get some well-earned rest,
To start the new year full of beans; prepared to try your best.
Your next teacher’s the lucky one - I’m certain this is true,
Because they get to teach and spend the time next year with you.
Wishing all students and their families a happy, fun filled and safe summer holidays.

SESE:
This activity involves taking our pulse before and after exercise to notice the difference between the two.
- To begin with everyone needs to take their resting pulse. To take your pulse you place your fingers across the pulse point at the wrist or the neck, and count how many pulses you feel in 1 minute.
- An adult’s heart rate is around 70 beats per minute, and a child’s is a bit higher. (A mouse’s is about 500 per minute, and an elephant’s 25!).
- Record what your resting pulse is.
- Now jog/run around for 5 minutes. When the 5 minutes is up, take your pulse again.
- Record what your pulse is now after exercise. What is the difference between the two? Why do you think your pulse rate was raised?
- Now wait 2 minutes and then take your pulse again. Has it returned to your resting rate yet?
- Heart rate increases with exercise so that more of the oxygen carried in the blood can reach the muscles. The fitter you are, the quicker your heart rate returns to normal.
- After your pulse rate has returned to normal you can try a different form of exercise – skipping/jumping on a trampoline. Did this raise your heart rate more or less that running did?
