There has been a school in Coolnasmear since 1846 with a new two roomed building being constructed in 1963. The school remained as a two teacher school until 1982 when a pre-fab was added for a third teacher. A new classroom, staff room and store room were added in 2005 and five years later another classroom and learning support room were added to the west of the original building. A class for children with autism opened in the pre-fab in 2013 and shortly afterwards the school embarked on a significant building programme adding a specially designed classroom, two sensory room and an office for our secretary. The upstairs of this extension houses two large mainstream classrooms. One year later in 2017 a second class for children with autism opened in temporary accommodation. The school is engaged in the process of building a new classroom for these children. As of September 2018 the school has an administrative principal, five mainstream class teachers, one full time and one shared learning support/ resource teacher and two teachers for children with autism. The school also has five special needs assistants.
