In November the Green Schools Committee re did their lunch box survey and they were delighted that so many pupils were using reusable bottles instead of single use plastic bottles. While they were going around the classes they came across these two girls who have fantastic reusable sandwich wraps. Well Done Girls!
As part of our work for our second Green Flag we are measuring rainfall. Two of our pupils from third class are diligently checking our rain gauge every day and logging the results in a notebook before they make a monthly rainfall graph.
WE started measuring the rainfall in June expecting it to be fairly low. It wasn't! We left our homemade rain gauge in situ for the summer holidays but unfortunately it had disappeared when we arrived back to school in September. We have started again with a new rain gauge in a different part of the school, hopefully this one will stay in place longer. Fifth Class are busy getting ready to re- do the survey on water use throughout the school. We are expecting some positive results!
World Water Day is observed on the 22nd of March every year. It is intended to remind us of the importance of fresh water for everyone and it highlights the fact that access to clean water is a struggle for many people worldwide. As we are working towards our Water Flag it was particularly appropriate for our school to emphasise the day. All classes dressed up in blue and/or white for the day and participated in classes based on the theme of Fresh Water For All. Ms O'Brien's Class also did a really interesting experiment where they filtered some muddy water from the school garden. The work of the green schools committee is on going all year. We have established a "drip squad" to check the taps in the school as part of our preparation for our water Flag. We were delighted to be invited to Clonmel to take part in a workshop on water conservation hosted by An Taisce on St Gobnait's Day, 11th February. The children who attended learned a huge amount and they will soon give a presentation to the school about the day. Below is a photo of the girls designing their ideal school, chock full of super green schools friendly ideas. After a delay because of bad weather and high winds, we finally got our water butt installed in the garden.
The children, staff, and parents of our sixth class pupils who had had their graduation ceremony earlier in the day assembled in our wonderful school garden to raise our first Green Flag in June 2018. It was the culmination of two years of hard work and the Green Schools Committee and indeed the entire school were justifiably proud of their efforts.
Past pupil Gavin Whelan, sports broadcaster with WLR kindly accepted our invitation to raise the flag. |
